Absorption and redistribution of nitrogen during grain-filling period of wheat and their regulation by 6-benzylaminopurine

The absorption and redistribution of N during grain-filling period of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in all organs as well as their regulation by 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) were reported in this paper. From anthesis to maturit, roots, stem and leaves of wheat exported 47%, 43% and 75% of their total N, respectively. Their contributions to ear N accumulation were 3%, 11% and 18%, respectively. The remaining 67% of ear N accumulation came from N currently absorbed from soil. At maturity, 83% of total plant N was found in the ear. The results of ~(15)N tracer experiments indicated that in all vegetative organs there was a net loss of total N and a net gain of N from the soil. Treatment of leaves twice with BA (0 DAA and 18 DAA) inhibited the export of total N from roots and leaves, but enhanced their current absorption of N from soil, noticibly decreased the N currently absorbed from soil in the ear, affected the stem to a lesser extent, and as a result, decreased ear N accumulation significantly; Treatment of ear twice with BA (0 DAA and 18 DAA) inhibited the total N export from roots, stem and leaves; and at the same time, enhanced the current N absorption by roots, stem, leaves and ear from soil, and has lesser effect on the ear N accumulation; BA treatment of leaves or ear once (18 DAA) diminished the total N exported from roots, stem and leaves, but significantly enhanced the current N absorption by these organs and especially ear from soil, finally increased the ear N accumulation significantly. Treatment with BA on 20 DAA increased ear N accumulation most significantly.
