Influence of apex on endogenous cytokinin contents in stem and cotyledons of pea plants

Endogenous contents of Z/ZR and i-Ade/Ado in stems of pea plants increased markedly 6 h after decapitation and reached their maxima in another 6 h, then decreased. Application of NAA on the cut surface could simulate the effect of apex and inhibited these changes. Similar pattern of change in cytokinin content was also found in the cotyledons after the same treatments. The increase in endogenous cytokinins caused by decapitation could be partly prevented by the excision of roots and cotyledons. The possible sources of the increased amount of cytokinins in stems and their relation to the growth of lateral buds were discussed.
