Changes of polyamine metabolism in drought-stressed sugarcane leaves and their relation to drought resistance

Sugarcane (S. officinarum L. var. The drought-sensitive Yuetang 57/423 and Co6304, and the drought-resistant Guitang 11 and NCo310) plants were subjected to drought by withholding water in pots in greenhouse. The influences of drought on the polyamine titre and the activities of arginine decarboxylase (ADC), ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), S-Adenylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC) and polyamine oxidase (PAO) were studied. Extending the duration of stress produced a significant increase in the activities of ADC, ODC, SAMDC and PAO. The increments of ADC and ODC activities in the drought-resistant varieties were larger than those in the drought sensitive varieties, but these of SAMDE and PAO activities in the drought-resistant varieties were lower than those in the drought-sensitive varieties. Consequently, Put rapidly accumulated in the drought-resistant varieties Guitang 11 and NCo310 while Spd and Spm accumulated more in the drought-sensitive varieties Yuetang 57/423 and Co6304. The ratios Put/Spd and Put/Spm were much higher in the drought-resistant varieties than in the drought-sensitivity. Therefore, the ratios Put/Spd and Put/Spm may be taken as indicators of drought resistance for sugarcane varieties.
