Professor
Y.S. Chan
Ying-Shing
Chan
is Professor of Physiology and Director of Neuroscience Research
Center, The University of Hong Kong, China.
He is also currently the Deputy Director of the Research
Center of Heart,
Brain, Hormone and Healthy Aging, The University of Hong Kong.
He was previously Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine,
The University of Hong Kong (1997-2001).
Professor Chan received his postdoctoral training in
the
Institute
of
Human Physiology
,
University
of
Pisa
and spent his sabbatical leave at The Rockefeller University, New
York. He has won
the University Outstanding Researcher Award and the Medical School
Teaching Medal. His
research interests centre on neural plasticity.
Recent projects focus on developmental establishment of
space-centered coordinates in relation to auditory-vestibular cues
as well as on strategies to stimulate neuroprotection and repair
of the adult nervous system.
Professor Chan was Chair of several international symposia
and reviewer of grants for several national research councils and
research foundations. His
academic standing is also reflected in invitations to deliver
Plenary Lectures and Keynote Lectures in international congresses
/ symposia. He also
serves on editorial boards of several scientific journals and
international program committee of congresses.
In recognition of his international standing, Professor
Chan has been commissioned to chair the 4th Congress of Federation
of Asian-Oceania Neuroscience Societies, FAONS (Nov. 30 ¨C
Dec. 1 2006
).
Professor
Chan served as President of The Hong Kong Society of Neurosciences
(3 terms), and Chairman of the
Institute
of
Biology
- Hong Kong Branch (4 terms).
Current or past services on national research committees
include the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (Biology &
Medicine), the Joint Research Scheme of the National Natural
Science Foundation of China / Hong Kong Research Grants Council,
and the Research Assessment Exercises (Health Sciences) of the
University Grants Council.
He was Secretary-General (1998-2002) of FAONS.
He is a founding member in both the International Brain
Research Organization (IBRO) Asia-Pacific Regional Committee.
He is currently Chair of this IBRO committee and a member
of the IBRO Executive Committee.
He is also currently President of FAONS.
