Main scientific achievements
(1)
Reporting at first time the long-term potentiation (LTP) of
C-fiber evoked field potentials in spinal dorsal horn and
discovering that activation of spinal NMDA, NK1 and NK2 receptors
is essential for the induction of the spinal LTP. Natural noxious
stimuli can also produce the spinal LTP but inhibited by
descending inhibitory system. The spinal LTP is believed to
underly hyperalgesia.
(2)
Reporting at first time that stimulation of A¦Ä fibers produces
long-term depression (LTD) of C fiber evoked field potentials in
spinal dorsal horn in normal animals but produces LTP in
spinallized ones. Confirming the descending inhibitory pathways
determing the direction of plasticity in synaptic transmission in
spinal dorsal horn.
(3)
Discovering that axotomized muscle afferents but no skin afferents
develop ongoing discharges of dorsal root ganglion and under the
condition of nerve injury uninjuured muscle afferents also produce
spontanious discharges.
