Ziqiang Luo, born in April 1962, graduated from Central South University, Xiang-Ya Medical School (previously known as
Hunan Medical University) in 1982 with a degree of Bachelor of Medicine (equivalent to Doctorate in Medicine in the
United States). He got a Master
degree in Pathophysiology from Hubei Medical University in
1989 and a Ph.D. degree in Physiology from Hunan
Medical University in 1998.
As a visiting scholar, he worked from 2000
-2002 in
the Department of Cellular
& Molecular Biology,
Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX studying
transcriptional regulation of Clara cell secretory protein.
He has been the supervisor for Ph.D. students since 2001;
the director of the Department
of Physiology, Xiang-Ya
School of Medicine, Central South University; the director
of Experimental Teaching
Center for Functional Subjects of Central South University;
and the President of the Council
of Hunan Association for Physiological Science.
For
years, Dr. Luo has been engaged in the study of pulmonary
physiology. His
professional interests include the study of regulation of
pulmonary surfactant synthesis, the function of Clara cells, and
the molecular mechanisms of acute lung injury.
Recently his research work focuses on the role of Clara
cells under certain physiological and pathological conditions,
especially their latent anti-fibrotic function during pulmonary
fibrosis. Additional
research interests include the relationship between
over-activation of peripheral glutamate receptors and acute lung
insult. Since 1998,
the research projects of
him and his research group
have been supported by five research grants from the
Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and four grants
from the Ministry of
Education of China National and the Natural
Science Foundation of Hunan Province.
He was a contributor for the 6th edition of the textbook of Physiology,
the associate chief-editor of the textbook of Physiology
(1st edition), and co-chief-editor of the
textbook Physiology for the Anesthesiologist£¬
which are endorsed
by the Ministry of Health
in China. In 2003,
he co-edited a scientific monograph entitled Nonrespiratory
Functions of Lung: Basic and Clinical.
For his numerous scientific contributions, he was honored
with a national teaching award by Ministry
of Education of China in 2005, three science and technology
progress awards by hunan province, and the young
teacher award by Fok Ying Tong
Education Foundation in 1998.
